I once read a study that said the average person tosses and turns about 30–50 times a night. Stay with me here. I know that’s a completely random thing to research… but I promise I’m going somewhere with this. When I read that, I immediately thought, “If I’m sleeping on a cotton pillowcase and I forgot to wear my bonnet (because let’s be honest, it happens) then how much frizz am I creating and how much moisture am I losing?”. Because 30–50 turns on cotton? That can’t be great for your hair.
Cotton is absorbent. That’s what makes it great for towels. But for your hair and skin? Not so much. Every time you move at night, cotton creates friction. And friction leads to frizz, breakage, dryness, tangling and loss of moisture. Now imagine that happening 30 to 50 times every single night.
And then I thought about my skincare because, here’s where it really hit me. I spend time cleansing, layering serums, applying moisturizer and sealing everything in. Only for my cotton pillowcase to absorb half of it overnight? That’s ridiculous.
The older I get, the more intentional I’ve become about moisture for my skin and my hair. That’s when I made the switch to a satin pillowcase. And honestly? She’s my hair protector and my anti-aging agent. She really is that girl.
Unlike cotton satin reduces friction, helps retain moisture, minimises frizz, is gentler on skin and doesn’t absorb your skincare products the way cotton does.
Once I made the permanent switch, I noticed that my hair was easier to manage in the morning, my curls stayed moisturised longer, I had less frizz, less breakage and my skin was smooth and it glowed.
I ended up making satin pillowcases for the whole family. But my favourite review was my brother’s. He told me he noticed his beard felt softer and thicker. And I can’t lie, his beard game is strong. So apparently, satin doesn’t discriminate because hair is hair.
If you’re investing in hair care, moisture retention, anti-aging skincare and protective styling. Then your pillowcase matters more than you think. I mean we spend 6–8 hours on it every night. So, switching from cotton to satin wasn’t just a cute aesthetic decision for me. I had to do it because it was practical, intentional, protective.
